-Tip 1-
Always check your aircraft pitot and static lines are clean before sending a pitot/static instrument for repair. Sometimes if the lines are dirty or contain water the instruments will display errors in readings.
-Tip 2-
Take extreme care in handling all instrumentation, especially gyroscopic instruments. They contain many fragile and calibrated parts and even small impacts on the instrument can be costly.
"Be extremely careful when setting indicator (gyroscope) on fixtures, work benches, etc., or when handling. Remember, dropping one end of an indicator 3/4-inch is equivalent to a 20G impact" - J.E.T. Component Maintenance Manual.
-Tip 3-
The transportation of instruments must also be done with care, always pack intruments in large boxes with plenty of packaging. Ensure when the box is sealed that the packing is tight enough as not to let anything move around in freight.
If packing pitot static insruments put plugs in the pitot and static ports, but make sure the plugs have small holes to vent pressure changes which may occur over the freight period. This is especially important if the freight is travelling by air.
Gyroscopic instruments which can be caged must ALWAYS be caged for freight!!! Failing to cage a gyro for freight can result in damage and can void warranties.
